About Midland

Midland is a city in the county of Midland, Texas, US, in the western area of Texas. It is situated in the Permian Basin, in the West Texas plains and has a total area of almost 72 square miles. In 2010, Midland had over 111,000 inhabitants. The city’s economy is mainly based on petroleum, but also on distribution and telecommunications.

Midland was established in 1881 and earned its name because of the central position it had between El Paso and Fort Worth. In 1890 it became one of the most important cattle shipping centers in Texas. The city of Midland became very important in 1923 when oil was discovered in the Permian Basin and then became the administrative center of the oil fields of West Texas. During the World War II it was the second largest bombardier training base in the US. The city further developed after the Spraberry Trend was discovered, which is still the third largest oil field in the US.

The most important gallery in Midland is McCormick Gallery from the Midland College, situated inside the Allison Fine Arts Building. It hosts works of students and artist of the city. Because the economy is mainly based on petroleum, there is also a Petroleum Museum situated on the outskirts of the city. Other places to visit include The Museum of the Southwest, the Commemorative Air Force, the American Airpower Heritage Museum and the Midland County Historical Museum. Therefore, Hotels in Midland TX are glad to receive you in Texas and are wishing you a pleasant trip.
